In 1997, parents of children who were brought together via Ped-Onc, (ACOR’s on-line support group) started discussing the creation of a universal awareness ribbon for children with cancer. Many colors were considered but after much thought it was decided that the color gold was the perfect choice for our cause. Gold is a precious metal, and our children are precious. Gigi Thorsen, who was a member of Ped-Onc at that time, and also a board member of Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation, approached Candlelighters’ national board with a request for seed funding of the first production of gold ribbon lapel pins. The board approved, and the first gold ribbon product was developed and promoted as the universal symbol for childhood cancer awareness.
In keeping with the desire to brand the gold ribbon symbol, in 2001 Candlelighters trademarked a new logo – one that combined the organization’s traditional candle and flame, with the gold ribbon. Since then we began producing numerous gold ribbon items which are sold through our web-store. These items include lapel pins, charms, vehicle magnets, and gift cards.
100% of the proceeds of these items are used to help fund our programs and services.
